About Ban Tai Beach

Ban Tai runs along the south coast just outside Thong Sala — a long, easy-going stretch of sand with fishing boats anchored offshore and views across the channel to Koh Samui. It's not the island's most dramatic beach, but its convenience is the whole point: five minutes from town, rarely crowded, and a genuinely pleasant place for an evening walk.

Ban Tai is also one of the more popular areas for longer-term residents — central, flat, and more affordable than the west coast hotspots.

Getting there

About 10 minutes by bike from Thong Sala along the south coast road — flat and easy the whole way.

Where to eat

Ban Tai has two genuinely good, non-touristy restaurants worth knowing about: Ratatouille, a European kitchen (French, German, Italian, Swiss) run by a chef with 30 years behind him, and Fisherman's Restaurant & Bar right at Ban Tai Pier, for seafood with an actual sea view.

Good to know

  • Good for a low-key sunset without leaving town
  • Not the place for snorkelling or dramatic swimming — treat it as a quiet stroll
  • Convenient if you're staying in the Ban Tai area for its central location and lower rents
