Koh Phangan vs Koh Samui vs Koh Tao
The honest differences, from someone who lives on one of them

These three islands share a ferry network and get lumped together constantly, but they're genuinely different trips. Here's the honest version, not the marketing-brochure version — obviously we're biased toward Phangan since it's where we live, but we'll tell you when one of the other two is actually the better call.
Koh Phangan — best for parties, yoga, and a wilder feel
No airport, so you arrive by ferry from Samui, Surat Thani, or Koh Tao (see our getting here guide). That alone keeps it a notch less developed than Samui. Famous for the Full Moon Party, but there's a real, separate yoga and wellness community in Srithanu that has nothing to do with partying. Good for: backpackers, party trips, longer wellness-focused stays, digital nomads (see our coworking guide), couples who want a bit of both worlds.
Koh Samui — best for an easy arrival and resort comfort
The only one of the three with an international airport, which makes it the easiest arrival by far — no ferry required if you fly straight in. Bigger, more developed, and has the widest range of accommodation from budget to genuinely world-class resorts. Best for: families, honeymooners, anyone who wants resort comfort without much hassle, or a short trip where ferry logistics would eat into limited time.
Koh Tao — best for diving, worst for a quiet beach holiday
Much smaller than either Phangan or Samui, and built almost entirely around diving — it's one of the cheapest, most popular places in the world to get PADI certified, with calm, clear water. Very social, very backpacker-heavy, quite built-up for its size. Best for: divers and soon-to-be divers, solo travellers wanting a social scene, short focused trips rather than long relaxed ones.
How to actually combine them
You don't have to pick just one. A common route: fly into Samui, ferry over to Phangan for the bulk of your trip (see our Phangan itinerary guide for how to spend those days), then a shorter hop to Tao for a couple of days of diving before flying home from Samui. Ferries between all three run frequently and the whole triangle can be covered without much wasted time — check current schedules on our ferry guide before you lock in dates.
The honest bottom line
- Want to party and don't mind basic: Phangan
- Want comfort and an easy trip: Samui
- Want to dive: Tao
- Can't decide: do all three, they're close enough that it's genuinely not much extra hassle
