While the Full Moon Party draws the tourists and the Half Moon Festival attracts the club crowd, Black Moon Culture appeals to the true music heads. Founded in 1999, it takes place every new moon — the darkest night of the month — on the outdoor beach arena at Mac's Bay in Ban Tai.

The vibe is distinctly different from Koh Phangan's other parties: darker, more psychedelic, more authentic. The crowd tends to be more experienced travellers, festival veterans and residents rather than first-timers. Music is strictly psytrance, progressive psy and tribal electronic — none of the commercial sounds you'll find at Full Moon.

The Setting

The outdoor arena at Mac's Bay opens directly onto the beach, with the absolute darkness of the new moon sky overhead and the Gulf of Thailand glittering behind the dancefloor. UV-reactive art installations, fire performers and elaborate stage designs transform the space from dusk to dawn.

Music

Psychedelic trance (psytrance) in all its forms — full-on, progressive, dark psy, Goa trance. Thai and international resident DJs plus monthly guest acts. Tempos typically run 140–150 BPM. This is not a party for people who prefer pop or hip-hop.
