Koh Phangan Hiking Trails
The real jungle routes, not just a beach stroll

Most people come to Phangan for beaches and don't realise how much genuine jungle interior the island has β real trails, real elevation, real sweat. Here are the three worth actually planning around, in rough order of difficulty.
Haad Rin to Haad Yuan β coastal trail
The easiest of the three and a good one to start with. This trail connects Haad Rin to the more remote Haad Yuan beach up the east coast, which otherwise can only be reached by long-tail boat. The start is the steepest part β humid jungle scramble for the first stretch β before it settles into a more manageable coastal path with genuinely great sea views. Allow 45β60 minutes each way, proper shoes required, and it's not really walkable at night.
Bottle Beach trek β from Chaloklum
Starting in Chaloklum village on the north side, this trek to Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) covers around 3km through forest with some genuinely steep, root-covered ascents and descents β it's short in distance but not easy. Budget 1β1.5 hours each way and don't underestimate it just because the map distance looks short. A common approach: take a long-tail boat there, hike back (or vice versa), rather than doing the full round trip on foot in one day.
Khao Ra summit β the hardest one
Khao Ra is the island's highest point, and the trail up is the longest and toughest of the three β steep, humid, and a real workout even though the total distance isn't huge. The payoff is the best panoramic view on Koh Phangan, worth it on a clear day. Start early morning both for cooler temperatures and to avoid being caught by afternoon rain, which turns the trail genuinely slippery.
Best time of year to hike
Roughly January to September gets you the most reliable trail conditions β outside the heaviest rainy-season stretch (see our weather guide), paths are less muddy and stream crossings are more manageable. Hiking is still possible in the wetter months, just muddier and best done in the morning before afternoon downpours.
Other, gentler trail options
If a full trek isn't your thing, the walk to Phaeng Waterfall and Than Sadet are both much shorter, well-marked, and closer to a nature walk than a hike β good options if you want jungle scenery without the sweat-soaked commitment of Khao Ra.
