Pharmacies
There are many commercial pharmacies on Phangan. Find the nearest one in Google Maps. There is a budget municipal pharmacy β open 17:00β21:00, weekends 08:00β21:00 (side entrance from Bangkok Bank). Basic supplies are available at 7-Eleven.
Hospitals on Phangan
- Bangkok Hospital Koh Phangan β main private hospital in Thong Sala. 24-hour emergency, surgery, X-ray, ultrasound. Accepts insurance.
- Government Hospital (Koh Phangan Hospital) β budget option near Thong Sala. Long waits, lower quality but lower cost.
β οΈ No gynaecologist on Phangan β the nearest is on Samui (Dr. Rapheephan clinic). Tests, smears, ultrasound, and gender scans available there.
Sunburn
The sun on Phangan is very strong even on cloudy days. For a burn: cold shower, aloe gel or panthenol, plenty of water. For blisters, fever or a large burn area β see a doctor.
Bike accident
- Make sure you are in a safe place (not on the road)
- Call an ambulance: 1669
- Tourist police: 1155 (required for insurance)
- Photograph the scene, bikes and other parties involved
- Call your insurance company
Jellyfish sting
- Do not rub the sting area with your hands
- Rinse with sea water (not fresh water!)
- Remove tentacles with a card or shell
- Apply vinegar or lemon juice
- For a severe reaction β go to hospital immediately
Dog bite
- Wash the wound with soap for at least 15 minutes
- Disinfect with antiseptic
- Within 24 hours β go to hospital for a rabies vaccination
- Don't wait for symptoms β rabies is only treatable before they appear
Scorpion sting
Small scorpions live on Phangan β their sting is painful but not lethal for adults. Wash the sting site, apply cold. For severe pain, swelling or difficulty breathing β go to hospital immediately.
Dengue Fever
Transmitted by mosquitoes. Symptoms: high fever (39β40Β°C), severe headache, muscle and joint pain, rash. If dengue is suspected β go to hospital immediately for a blood test. Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen β paracetamol only.
