Local currency — Thai Baht
Almost everywhere on Phangan payment is cash only. Cards are accepted at a few larger shops and in 7-Eleven (for purchases over 300 baht, +3% surcharge). So you will need cash baht — either from an ATM or exchanged.
ATMs
Located throughout the island, operating 24/7. All cards incur a 250-baht fee — this is a fixed local bank charge regardless of the amount or card type. The withdrawal limit is 30 notes (usually 30,000 baht). If the ATM runs out of 1,000-baht notes the limit will be 15,000 baht.
Tip: withdraw larger amounts to avoid paying the fee multiple times. Cards like Wise or Revolut have low or zero foreign transaction fees, saving you money.
Bank branches
You can go to a bank branch with your card and passport and withdraw cash without the ATM fee. The name on your card must match your passport. If there is a one-letter difference (different transliteration) — go to Kasikorn Bank (blue), they are the most flexible.
Currency exchange
Dollars, euros and most major currencies can be exchanged at any bank or exchange booth in Thong Sala. Our partner Centerpoint Exchange offers competitive rates with no hidden fees.
