Ecstatic Dance, Cacao Ceremonies & Sound Healing

If Full Moon Party is Phangan's loud, famous reputation, this is the quieter, less-talked-about other half — a genuinely active scene of ecstatic dance nights, cacao ceremonies, and sound healing sessions, mostly centred around Srithanu. It draws a completely different crowd from Haad Rin, often the same people doing a yoga teacher training or just staying long-term for the wellness scene.

What these events actually are

Ecstatic dance is free-form movement to a curated set (live musicians or a DJ), no steps to learn, no partner needed — the whole point is dancing however your body wants to, not performing for anyone. Cacao ceremonies usually open or accompany a dance or sound healing session — a facilitator serves ceremonial-grade cacao, often with a brief intention-setting circle first. Sound healing sessions use gongs, singing bowls, and other instruments for a more meditative, lying-down experience rather than movement.

Where to find them

Several venues run these regularly, mostly weekly:

• AUM Sound Healing Centre — Friday night ecstatic dance in a jungle setting, often paired with cacao and access to a sauna, steam room, and ice bath as part of the same ticket
• Studios around Srithanu — several yoga and wellness spaces host dedicated dancefloors and cacao ceremony nights on a rotating weekly schedule
• Jungle art-space venues — a handful of more alternative spaces run ecstatic dance with a stronger community/ceremonial framing

What to actually expect your first time

• No alcohol, usually no phones/photography during the dance itself — this is intentional, not a missing amenity
• Comfortable, loose clothing — you will sweat if you actually dance
• Bring water; cacao is mildly stimulating and dance sessions run a couple of hours
• It's completely normal to sit out part of it — nobody's tracking who's dancing the whole time
• Ticket prices are usually modest (a few hundred baht), often including the extras like sauna access at venues that have them

Not for everyone, and that's fine

This scene has a genuine, sincere spiritual framing that isn't everyone's thing — if the language of "intention-setting" and "heart-opening" makes you roll your eyes, you might not vibe with it, and that's a completely reasonable reaction. But if you're curious, going in with an open mind rather than pre-judging the language usually leads to a better night than skipping it entirely.
