Everyone back home still thinks I moved to a party island. My actual Tuesday looks nothing like that.
I got a message from an old colleague last week asking if I was "still living on that party island," half-joking, half genuinely picturing me stumbling out of Haad Rin every full moon. Fair enough — that's still the entire reputation this island has back home. But I've been here since 2021 and I think I've been to two Full Moon Parties total. My actual week looks nothing like that. 💻
What people picture
Buckets of alcohol, fire skipping, a beach absolutely rammed with people until sunrise. That's real, it exists, it happens once a month in one specific bay — and it's genuinely fun if that's what you're after. But treating it as "what Phangan is" is like judging all of Bangkok off one night on Khao San Road.
What my actual Tuesday looks like
Up early-ish, coffee at a cafe with decent wifi and a plug socket, a few hours of actual work, a swim or a bike ride somewhere quiet in the afternoon, dinner with the same five or six people I keep running into because the nomad/remote-work crowd here is genuinely small enough that you know everyone within a couple of months. In bed at a normal hour more nights than not. It's honestly closer to a quiet small-town routine than anything resembling the reputation.
Why the shift is real, not just my personal experience
I'm not the only one — the island's coworking and long-stay infrastructure has genuinely grown up around exactly this crowd. Real fibre internet in most cafes and coworking spots now, a visible, steady population of remote workers and small entrepreneurs rather than just backpackers passing through, and honestly the vibe in Srithanu on a Tuesday afternoon is more "laptop and smoothie bowl" than "buckets and glow paint." The party scene is still there and still real, it's just one bay, one night a month — not the whole island, and definitely not most days.
The honest caveat
I'm not saying the reputation is wrong exactly — Full Moon Party genuinely is huge and genuinely does define how a lot of first-time visitors experience the island for their one visit. I'm saying it's not the whole picture, and if you're actually considering staying longer than a party weekend, the quieter version is very much here too, and for a lot of us, it's the actual reason we stayed.
