Wet season on Phangan β€” what nobody warns you about

N
Nick, living on Phangan since 2023

My first rainy season here, I genuinely thought I'd made a huge mistake booking five months on the island. By the second one, I'd learned to just plan around it β€” and honestly, some of my favourite days here have been rainy-season days. Here's what actually happens, not the brochure version.

It's not constant rain

This is the biggest misconception. Rainy season (roughly May to November) doesn't mean grey skies for six months. Most days it's sunny in the morning, and rain arrives as a sharp, heavy downpour for an hour or two β€” often in the afternoon or overnight β€” then clears up completely. You can build a whole beach day around checking the forecast in the morning.

September–October is the real test

This stretch is genuinely the wettest, and some of the low-lying roads do flood temporarily after the heaviest downpours. Bike carefully, give yourself extra time, and don't be surprised if a waterfall trip gets rained out entirely for a day. Our weather guide has the month-by-month breakdown if you're planning a trip around this.

Things I learned the hard way

  • Silica gel everywhere, always β€” see our humidity guide after I lost a laptop and a camera to it
  • Ferries get delayed or cancelled more often when the sea is rough β€” build slack into travel plans, don't book a tight connection during a storm system
  • The island is genuinely quieter and cheaper β€” accommodation prices drop noticeably, and popular beaches actually feel empty
  • Waterfalls are at their best β€” more water, more dramatic, worth timing a visit for a clear morning right after a rainy stretch

Would I recommend visiting in rainy season?

If your whole trip is built around beach days and boat trips, no β€” go in dry season. If you want lower prices, fewer crowds, and don't mind adjusting plans around an afternoon downpour, it's honestly underrated. Just don't come expecting non-stop sunshine and be surprised when reality doesn't match.
