A new luxury tented resort is opening on Phangan's wild northeast coast

Not the kind of story we usually cover — most of what lands on this page is budget travel and visa admin — but this one's genuinely interesting for what it signals about where the island's headed.

What's actually being built

KAIA Koh Phangan is a new beachfront tented resort going up on the island's northeastern coast, surrounded by protected national park — the kind of remote, still-wild stretch most backpackers never see because there's no road straight to it. It's a joint project between Bound and Beyond (a Thai hospitality investment firm) and Cloud Collective (an outdoor-hospitality specialist), and it's built around 31 private tented suites — each 77m², ocean views, an outdoor deck with its own bathtub, four-poster bed, teak-panelled shower.

The sustainability angle is at least specific

Floorboards are upcycled teak, rugs made from recycled plastic — not just marketing copy, actual stated material choices. The brand describes itself as "barefoot elegance," which, sure, is a phrase resort PR loves, but the northeastern coast genuinely is one of the least-developed parts of the island, so building something low-impact there rather than another concrete block matters more than it would somewhere already built up.

What it means for the rest of us

Nothing changes for backpacker Phangan — Haad Rin, Srithanu, the budget bungalow scene, all of that carries on exactly as it is. But it's one more data point that the island is attracting serious hospitality investment beyond the Full Moon Party reputation, which — depending who you ask — is either exciting or a little bittersweet.
