Here's a fact that surprises a lot of visitors: Koh Phangan's entire electricity supply runs through a single undersea cable from the mainland. There's no backup grid connection — if that cable has an issue, the island genuinely feels it. And according to the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), a serious upgrade to that setup isn't expected before 2030.

Why solar is picking up here

That single point of failure is a big part of why solar installation has become a real, growing business on the island rather than a niche eco-statement. Entropy Solar (operating locally as Phangan.Solar) has expanded its installation work here to meet demand from both businesses and homeowners. On the resort end, Conrad Koh Phangan now runs entirely on renewable energy — one of the more visible examples of a bigger, quieter trend of guesthouses and villas adding solar water heaters, LED retrofits and panel systems.

What it means if you're staying long-term

If you're renting a villa or apartment for months rather than weeks, it's worth asking whether the property has any solar backup or battery setup — not essential, but useful context if the island ever has a power interruption tied to that single undersea cable. For day-to-day visitors it's a non-issue, but it's a good example of infrastructure most people never think about until it doesn't work.
