What's been unveiled
Surat Thani International Airport (URT) has unveiled plans for a new passenger terminal, parking building, and related infrastructure, with a budget of roughly 4 billion baht. The new terminal is designed to lift capacity from the current 1,400 passengers/hour (about 4 million/year) to 2,000 passengers/hour — around 8 million passengers a year, effectively doubling capacity. The design concept is based on sea waves and is meant to incorporate the province's arts, culture and cuisine, rather than being a generic terminal box.
The realistic timeline
This is very much a long-term project, not an imminent change: the Environmental Impact Assessment is still being prepared, approval is expected within 2027, construction is projected to start in 2028, and the whole thing is targeted to open in 2031. Terminal 2's own expansion, separately, has already been completed and is already handling more traffic than before.
