Phuket just got facial-recognition passport gates — worth knowing if Bangkok's your way in too
Most of us flying to Phangan land in Bangkok or Samui first, so this isn't directly at our doorstep yet — but it's a genuinely good sign for how Thailand's handling arrivals in 2026, and it might reach the airports we actually use.
What launched
Phuket International Airport switched on automated border control (ABC) gates on June 13, 2026. The system uses facial recognition to match your live scan against your Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) and passport data already on file — no more standing in line to hand a human your passport and wait while they type. Reported wait-time reduction is up to 70%.
The TDAC part, if you've forgotten
Since May 2025, every non-Thai national has had to fill out the TDAC online before arrival — it replaced the old paper TM6 form. It's free, takes under 5 minutes at tdac.immigration.go.th, and you can only submit it within 72 hours of arrival. If you haven't done this before flying in, do it — the ABC gates only work if you've already got a TDAC on file.
Is this coming to where we actually land?
Officially, other major gateways — Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang in Bangkok, plus Chiang Mai and Hat Yai — "may adopt similar systems" going forward, timed to be ready ahead of the Q4 high season. Nothing confirmed for a specific date yet, but Phuket being first and it working well is a decent sign. We'll update this if/when it lands somewhere that actually shortens the queue for most people heading to Phangan.
