Thailand's had 17.36 million visitors so far in 2026 — and more flights are coming
Not directly a Phangan story, but worth knowing if you're weighing up a trip: Thailand recorded 17.36 million foreign tourist arrivals between January 1 and July 18, 2026, generating around 838.73 billion baht in tourism revenue. China, Malaysia, India, Russia and South Korea are the five biggest source markets right now.
Why this actually matters for planning a trip
Airlines expand capacity when demand is genuinely there, and that's happening — Shenzhen–Phuket flights went from three to four per week, and Emirates bumped its Dubai–Phuket route up to three daily flights using their newer A350 aircraft. More capacity into the southern gateway airports (Phuket, and by extension Surat Thani/Samui connections) generally means more competition on fares and easier connections, not fewer.
Arrivals are actually down about 3% compared to the same period last year, so this isn't some record-breaking boom — it's a steady, healthy summer season with growth in specific short-haul markets (China, Taiwan school holidays) offsetting softer numbers elsewhere.
What it means if you're headed to Phangan
Most of this traffic lands in Bangkok or Phuket rather than directly reaching Koh Phangan (which, as covered on our airport page, has no airport of its own) — but healthy overall demand tends to mean more flight options and reasonably stable pricing into Samui and Surat Thani too, the two real gateways to this island.
