Thailand visa-free entry confirmed through end of 2026 — what this actually means for you

Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs quietly confirmed this a few weeks ago and it's good news: visa-free entry for most Western nationalities continues through December 31, 2026. I say "quietly" because there was no big announcement — they just updated the policy and carried on. Classic.

Who's covered and for how long

Most EU countries, UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, and many others get 60 days visa-free on arrival. Some nationalities still only get 30 days — always worth checking the Thai immigration website for your specific passport before you book flights.

The 60-day allowance has been in place for a while now and seems to be staying. For context: before this, most Western passports only got 30 days, which made staying for a couple of months a bureaucratic pain.

Extending your stay — the immigration office in Thong Sala

You can extend your 60-day visa-free stay by another 30 days at the immigration office here in Thong Sala. It's 1,900 baht and honestly pretty painless if you go on a weekday morning. Bring your passport, two 4×6 photos, and a completed TM.7 form (they have these at the office). Allow maybe an hour for the whole process.

One thing: the office sometimes runs out of forms early in the day, especially around full moon when everyone who overstayed needs to sort their paperwork at once. Go early.

Visa runs from Phangan

With 60 days, a lot of people don't need to do visa runs anymore — which is a relief because they're a bit of an adventure. But if you're here for 90+ days, the standard route is ferry to Surat Thani → bus to the Malaysian border → cross and come back. Takes 2-3 days total and costs around 2,500–4,000 baht depending on which tour company you go with.

Fair warning: immigration officers are well aware of the visa run game. If you've done several in a row, you might get questioned more thoroughly at the border. After two or three back-to-back visa exemptions, it's worth looking into a proper tourist visa from a Thai consulate, or one of the long-term options if you're staying more than 6 months.

The bottom line

If you're planning a trip to Phangan for the rest of 2026, you're fine. Just don't overstay — the fines start at 500 baht per day and it can create problems for future entries to Thailand.
