The oldest temple on the island

Wat Phu Khao Noi translates roughly to "the temple of the small mountain," and it's considered the oldest temple on Koh Phangan — founded around 1400 CE, according to local accounts, by monks who were among the first to settle the island. That's a genuinely long history for a small island temple, and it's still an active place of worship today, not a museum piece.

What you'll see

The temple sits on a low hill just outside Thong Sala, with golden spires visible through the surrounding trees and a genuinely good view over the southern part of the island from the grounds. It's a working temple rather than a polished tourist attraction — expect a quieter, more authentic visit than some of the bigger temples elsewhere in Thailand.

Getting there

Around 10 minutes by bike from Thong Sala. It's an easy, flat ride — no mountain road required, which makes this a good stop if you want a taste of the island's culture without committing to a full day of exploring.

• Cover your shoulders and knees — this applies to all Thai temples, no exceptions
• Remove your shoes before entering any building
• Keep your voice down — it's an active place of worship, not a photo backdrop
• No entry fee, but a small donation is appreciated if you're able
