Why get a TR instead of just showing up
If your passport isn't on the visa-exemption list, a Tourist Visa (TR), also called the e-Visa, is your standard route in. But it's also worth considering even if you are exemption-eligible: exemption entry can technically be refused at the discretion of the immigration officer, while a TR is pre-approved before you ever board the plane — genuinely useful if you can't afford any uncertainty around a specific trip.
How to apply
Apply online through Thailand's official e-Visa portal, or through a Royal Thai Embassy/Consulate — including the consulates in Penang and Kota Bharu, Malaysia, a common stop for people already on the island doing a visa run. Processing typically takes 5–7 working days once all documents are submitted.
Length of stay
60 days on entry, extendable once for a further 30 days at any Thai immigration office (including Phangan's own office in Thong Sala) — 1,900 baht, TM.7 form, passport, photo.
Don't forget the TDAC
Same as every other entry route in 2026: the Thailand Digital Arrival Card has to be completed online before you fly, regardless of which visa route you're using.
