Thailand is exploring direct China and Europe flights into Surat Thani — but it's still just a proposal
Worth flagging because it would genuinely change how people get to this side of the Gulf — but also worth being clear that this is not a done deal yet.
What was actually discussed
On July 16, 2026, Thailand's Deputy Transport Minister met with tourism stakeholders — including the Tourism Association of Koh Samui — to discuss pursuing direct international flights from China and Europe straight into Surat Thani Airport, plus a "seamless" luggage-transfer system that would deliver bags directly to hotels on Koh Samui rather than making passengers collect them at the carousel.
The honest status
No airlines, no routes, and no launch dates have been confirmed. The ministry instructed the Department of Airports to start talking to airlines, immigration and customs about it "as soon as possible" — which is genuine movement, but it's a starting point, not an announcement of a new flight you can book. The stated goal is reducing pressure on Bangkok's airports and getting more tourism revenue flowing directly into the south.
