Best Sunset Spots on Koh Phangan

Why Phangan for Sunsets?
Koh Phangan's elongated shape, with its western coastline facing open sea, makes it one of the best places in the Gulf of Thailand to watch the sun go down. On clear evenings the sky goes through extraordinary shades of orange, pink and deep red before the stars take over.
Top Sunset Spots
1. Khao Ra Viewpoint (635 m)
The highest point on the island β a winding mountain road leads to a platform with 360Β° views. On a clear day you can see Koh Samui and Koh Tao. The sunset from up here, with the whole western coast stretched below you, is genuinely breathtaking. Allow 30 minutes by bike from Thong Sala; the last section is steep β a PCX or jeep handles it better than a Click. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset for the best light.
2. Zen Beach, Srithanu β the most popular of all
If there's one single spot people actually mean when they say "watch the sunset on Phangan," it's this one. Southern Srithanu, west-facing, with a daily live-music jam session in high season starting around 5pm β drums, guitars, whoever turns up. This is the most social sunset experience on the island, hands down. Full detail on our Zen Beach page, including how to actually find it (it's tucked past the C&M Cultural Centre school and easy to miss the first time).
3. Srithanu (Sri Thanu) Beach
The broader hippy heart of Koh Phangan, just north of Zen Beach, has its own cluster of laid-back sunset bars right on the water's edge. The Agama Yoga area and nearby Jungle Bar are perennial favourites if Zen Beach feels too busy.
4. Haad Yao (Long Beach)
The long, west-facing beach is perfect for a quiet sunset swim followed by drinks at one of the beachside restaurants. Less of a scene than Srithanu or Zen Beach, more of an experience β just you, the sand and the fading light.
5. Mae Haad
A peaceful bay in the north-west with mangroves and a sandbar. Quiet, photogenic, less visited than the other spots β ideal if you want a sunset to yourself.
6. Haad Salad
A small north-west bay with turquoise water and coral reef. At sunset the light turns the water extraordinary shades of green and gold. Often quiet even in high season.
Tips for the Best Sunset
- Check the weather β sunsets are best 1β2 days after rain when the sky is clear
- Arrive at least 30 minutes early for a viewpoint; the sky starts changing well before the sun hits the horizon
- The best sunsets in high season (NovemberβMarch) tend to be more vivid due to lower humidity
- Bring a light layer for the viewpoint β it gets cool after dark up at 635 m
