Viewpoints on Koh Phangan
Khao Ra — The Island's Summit
At 635 metres (the summit sign says so, though older guidebooks round it to 627), Khao Ra is the highest point on Koh Phangan. A paved mountain road winds up through the jungle, getting progressively steeper near the top. The view from the summit platform takes in the entire western coastline, Koh Samui to the south, and on the clearest days, Koh Tao far to the north. We've given it a full writeup on our Khao Ra page.
Bottle Beach Viewpoint
A lookout platform above the remote Bottle Beach on the north coast. Getting here requires either the 2-hour jungle trek from Chalok Lam or a boat to Bottle Beach followed by a short climb. The reward is a dramatic aerial view of the secluded bay far below.
Domsila Viewpoint
A short, easy platform right next to Phaeng Waterfall's car park — no real climb needed, just a five-minute walk. Panoramic views over the island's interior and out to Koh Samui. See our Phaeng Waterfall page — most people combine the two in one trip.
Thong Nai Pan Viewpoint
On the road down to Thong Nai Pan on the east coast, several natural viewpoints offer stunning views over the twin bays. Stop anywhere the road opens up — these are some of the most dramatic coastal views on the island.
One common mix-up: if you've read about a "Secret Buddha Garden" or "Magic Garden" on a Thai island and assumed it's here — it's actually on Koh Samui, not Phangan. Don't waste a day looking for it on this island.
Practical Tips
- Bring water — the mountain roads offer no shops
- Hire a motorbike with some power (PCX 150 or above) for the steep sections
- Morning views are often clearer than evening due to less haze building through the day
- After rain the jungle is vivid green and waterfalls are at their best — combine viewpoints with a waterfall visit
