About Than Sadet
Than Sadet National Park protects the forested interior of eastern Koh Phangan and its most celebrated natural feature — the Than Sadet waterfall system. The falls cascade down a series of granite boulders through thick jungle, forming natural pools perfect for swimming in the heat of the day.
The site holds royal significance: several Thai kings visited and meditated here, and the boulders at the lower falls bear carved royal insignia. The river that feeds the falls, Nam Tok Than Sadet, is considered sacred.
The Cascades
The waterfall trail leads from the park entrance up through jungle to several levels of falls:
- Lower falls: The largest and most accessible, with a deep pool ideal for swimming. The royal stone carvings are visible here. About 15 minutes from the entrance.
- Middle falls: A further 10–15 minutes up, quieter and with a smaller but beautiful pool.
- Upper falls: The most remote section — fewer visitors, pristine jungle. Allow 45–60 minutes from the entrance.
Getting There
By bike from Thong Sala, head east on the main road toward Ban Tai, then follow signs for Than Sadet. The road climbs into the hills — comfortable on any bike but steep in the final section. Car park at the entrance; from there it's on foot. Allow 35 minutes from Thong Sala.
When to Visit
The falls are most impressive after rain — the flow increases dramatically and the jungle is lush and green. In the dry season (December–March) the upper falls can slow to a trickle, though the lower falls usually hold water year-round. Early morning is quietest; avoid noon to 14:00 when tour groups arrive.
What to Bring
- Swimwear — the pools are excellent and you'll want to swim
- Water shoes or sandals with grip — the boulders are slippery
- Insect repellent — the jungle path has mosquitoes
- 200 baht entry fee (cash only)
- Water and snacks — no vendors inside the park
