Two versions: O-A and O-X

The Non-Immigrant O-A is the standard retirement visa — a 1-year multiple-entry visa, renewable indefinitely from inside Thailand once you're here, and it needs a passport valid at least 18 months at time of application.

The Non-Immigrant O-X is the longer option: 5 years, renewable once for another 5 (10 years total) — but it's only available to nationals of a specific list of countries: the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland and Japan. It requires a passport valid at least 36 months.

Age is a hard cutoff

You must be at least 50 years old at the time of application — there's no flexibility for someone turning 50 shortly after applying. Plan around your actual birthday, not the trip date.

Money and insurance

You need 800,000 baht sitting in a Thai bank account, or a monthly income of at least 65,000 baht — the same seasoning logic as other long-stay visas applies (don't drop the full amount in right before applying). Mandatory Thai-recognised health insurance is also required, plus a clean criminal record and a basic medical certificate.

Which one should you actually apply for

If your nationality qualifies for O-X and you want to avoid the annual renewal admin, it's the more convenient long-run option. If not, O-A is still a solid, well-established route — plenty of long-term retirees on Phangan are on exactly this visa, renewing every year at the Thong Sala immigration office.
