The roof of Koh Phangan
Khao Ra ("mountain of the shadow") is the tallest peak on the island, sitting inside the Thansadet–Koh Phangan National Park. The summit sign nails it down officially at 635 metres above sea level — older blog posts and guidebooks tend to say 627 m, which is close enough that nobody's really lying, but the park's own signage says 635.
From the top, on a clear day, you get a genuine 360° panorama: the whole western coastline of Phangan laid out below, Koh Samui to the south, and — if the haze cooperates — Koh Tao to the north. It's the single best view on the island, and it costs nothing but the ride up.
Getting there by bike
Head north from Thong Sala toward Ban Madua Wan; signs eventually point you toward the viewpoint road. The lower section is easy, but the last stretch climbs sharply — a Honda Click will struggle, a PCX 150 manages it, and a jeep is the most relaxed option if you're not confident on a steep, sometimes loose surface. Allow around 30 minutes from Thong Sala, more if you stop for photos (you will).
Hiking to the summit
If you'd rather walk, there's a marked jungle trail that starts lower down and takes roughly 1.5–2 hours one way, following a stream and an old water reservoir before the final scramble to the top. It's genuinely the toughest hike on the island — bring more water than you think you need, decent shoes (not sandals), and start early to avoid the worst of the midday heat.
When to go
Sunset (roughly 17:30–18:00, seasonal) is the classic time — golden light over the whole west coast. Early morning has its own appeal: cooler air, mist sitting in the valleys, and a real chance of having the summit to yourself. Avoid midday if you can; the light is flat and the climb is brutal in full sun.
Good to know
- No shops or water at the top — bring everything with you
- Combine with Phaeng Waterfall and Domsila viewpoint, which are on the way
- The graffiti-covered summit sign is a bit of a landmark in itself — expect to see other travellers' names scratched into it going back years
- Bring a light layer if you're staying for sunset — it cools down fast once the sun's gone
