Phaeng Waterfall
The island's biggest falls
Phaeng is generally agreed to be the tallest and most dramatic waterfall on Koh Phangan, set inside a national park area in the jungle-covered centre of the island. A paved road runs almost all the way to a car park right at the base of the trail, which makes it one of the more accessible waterfalls too — no serious trekking required to reach the main falls.
What you'll see
The water drops through a series of granite boulders into pools shaded by thick jungle canopy. How impressive it looks depends entirely on when you go — more on that below. When the flow is strong, it's genuinely one of the best swimming spots on the island; a wide, cool pool right at the base of the falls.
Domsila viewpoint — right next door
From the same car park, a short five-minute walk leads up to Domsila viewpoint, a platform with panoramic views back over the island's interior and out toward Koh Samui. Almost everyone who visits Phaeng combines it with Domsila — there's no reason not to, it barely adds any time.
The seasonal catch
Koh Phangan's waterfalls are genuinely seasonal, and Phaeng is no exception. During the wet season (roughly June–November, heaviest September–October) it's flowing hard and worth the trip. In the driest stretch of the year (February–April) it can slow to a trickle or dry up almost entirely — worth checking recent reports or asking locally before making a special trip out of season.
Getting there
From Thong Sala, head toward the island's interior following signs for the national park — about 20 minutes by bike on a paved road. The car park is at the base; from there it's a short, easy walk to the falls themselves.
Good to know
- Bring cash for the entrance fee — no card machines out here
- Water shoes help on the wet rocks around the pools
- Combine with Khao Ra viewpoint if you're already out this way — they're on the same general route
- Go on a weekday morning if you can; it's one of the more visited waterfalls, especially in high season
